Comparison between HTC ChaCha and Blackberry Curve 8520

With Facebook integration becoming a key feature on mobile phones, developers have been keen to release social messaging focused handsets for consumers on a tight budget. Two such phones are the HTC ChaCha and Blackberry Curve 8520.

The Curve is much more lightweight as a device, coming in at 120g, compared with the ChaCha’s 106g. The Blackberry mobile also looks more compact, and reviews have been positive about the front-panel layout and comfortable keyboard. The HTC on the hand is, debatably, a little odd looking, with the screen at an angle to the keyboard. Personal preference is of course a factor, but the Curve could be said to look more conventional.
The Blackberry is not a touchscreen smartphone, and input is solely dependent on the QWERTY keyboard and optical track-pad. The screen size is a relatively modest 2.4”, with a pixel density of 151 PPI. HTC’s model also has a slightly bigger 2.6” display, but it’s a touchscreen with multi-touch input. Screen resolution and picture quality is better. Storage could also be seen as a relative triumph on the ChaCha since it has 512MBs of RAM and ROM, while the Curve only has 128MB and 256 MB respectively.

For messaging phones, perhaps issues like storage and processor speed are secondary. But it’s important to note that both are powered by sub-1GHz single core setups, with the ChaCha outstretching the Curve by 800MHz to 512MHz. The operating system of the ChaCha is version 2.3 Gingerbread, a proven, newish multitasking environment which works well with the touch screen. The Curve runs Blackberry OS 4.2, which is usable but far from cutting edge compared with the recent RIM handsets.

Experts recommend antivirus solutions for smartphones

Next time you buy that expensive antivirus software for your personal computer, take one for your smartphone too. Cyber security experts have cited a new threat, one where a hacker can hack your cellphone just as he would hack a computer. With 3G phones raiding the market, and gizmo addicts using phones instead of computers to access the virtual world, experts speak of handheld devices falling prey to security risks, especially since only less than 10% cellphone users are aware of anti-virus solutions for mobile phones and none of the world's leading antivirus vendors have specialised solutions for mobile phone malwares.

Cyber security expert Anshul Abhang said with mobile phones becoming as handy as personal computers, people tend to spend more time browsing on phones than computers. "Till 3G was launched, browsing speed was limited and people did not use cellphones for browsing and downloading. But now, with wide bandwidths on 3G phones, users tend to download everything on their smartphones. This, when they are not even aware of the fact that mobile phones too can fall prey to security risks," said Abhang.

A new way to pay through your cellphone

TIt's paradoxical that the number of Indians who have access to toilets and banking services are fewer than those who use cell phones. On the flip side, it translates to a big business opportunity for those who can provide access to financial services through  mobile phones.

To help the corporates tap this, the RBI issued licences a few months ago to seven entities for offering semi-closed mobile wallets. Subsequently, Bharti Airtel's subsidiary Airtel Money has launched a pilot initiative in Gurgaon, near Delhi, with the aim of expanding it later. It has tied up with a few coffee shops, restaurants and cinemas in the suburb. More companies are expected to launch their 'wallets' shortly.

Why are they called semiclosed mobile wallets? Because once you load money into your cell phone from a licenced semi-closed mobile wallet provider, you can make payments with it, but can't use it to withdraw money. People without bank accounts will be able to pay most of their utility bills and make over-the-counter transactions using cell phones. This will make the mobile wallets equally appealing to the unbanked as well as the well-heeled; while India has more than 700 million mobile phone connections, only 50,000 of its six lakh villages have bank branches.

Says an RBI spokesperson: "Semi-closed instruments have been a popular mode for 'non-face to face' payments such as the Internet channels for booking railway tickets, utility payments, etc. However, access to the Internet (in India) is limited." While the penetration of cell phones is more than 60%, it's less than 9% for the Internet.

In the case of Airtel's Gurgaon pilot plan, the registration fee is 50. You can register by submitting relevant documents at a company's retail outlet and your SIM card will be upgraded-one SIM card is removed and another inserted. You can then activate your Airtel Money account by choosing an MPIN (mobile pin number) and load cash into your mobile phone. You are now ready to make payments through the phone.

If you don't have an Airtel connection, you will have to get one to avail of the Airtel Money services. Firms such as ItzCash Cards, which are already working with most telecom companies for their prepaid top-ups and post-paid bill payments, are expected to follow a procedure similar to Airtel's. For making payments, some firms have developed a syntax for specific payments.

As of now, the Reserve Bank of India permits a one-time maximum transaction of 5,000 through these wallets, the logic being that it would cover all payments with minimum amount at risk. The cap could be raised after successful implementation.

The RBI spokesperson notes that with the development of Near Field Communication (NFC)- based technology-which enables communication between devices when brought close to each other semi-closed mobile wallets "would become a potent channel for OTC payments, helping in the migration of cash-based payments to non-cash based payments". While Airtel is optimistic about their use to pay merchants like chemists and kirana stores, Naveen Surya, managing director, ItzCash Cards, says this will be possible only at a later stage.

Kerala to launch SMS alerts for vaccinations of infants:

Parents of new born babies in Kerala will soon get SMS reminders on their mobile phones about the details of mandatory vaccinations for the infant.

The system has been developed by Information Kerala Mission (IKM),the e-governance project of the Government of Kerala, as part of the 'Hospital Kiosks'.

The messages will be sent to the parents who register online the birth of their child through the Hospital Kiosks, the facility arranged at the hospitals for birth and death registrations, said A Shaji, Director (Implementation), Information Kerala Mission.

"The SMS facility is an integrated project connected with r Hospital Kiosk programme through which people can register birth and death at the respective hospitals and get the certificates easily," Shaji said.

"The mobile numbers mentioned in the birth registration forms will be collected and details of vaccination will be sent as SMS to the number. There are several vaccinations and injections to be administered to the new-borns. The SMS facility will help parents to remember the exact date and period of vaccinations and its significance," he said.

The IKM is planning to launch the programme state wide from next month in all hospitals which have the Hospital Kiosks. At present, 365 hospitals--both government and private--across the state have Kiosks, Shaji said.

As Health Department has made the birth registration through health kiosks a mandatory, the date collection will not be a hard task, he said.

"The SMS alert system is a fully computerised facility. Each and every details of vaccination and the numbers of parents will be feeded and updated in the software," he said.

However, the official said the major challenge before the department is the accuracy of the updates.

"People, especially those from remote areas will not come to city hospitals for vaccination or related activities. They will surely go to their nearer primary health centres (PHCs) for that. Those regional health centres may not have the facility to ensure whether the parents, who got the SMS alert, have come and take vaccination for his child," Shaji.

If there is no concrete system to register and update the vaccination procedures, the department can not ensure that all new born children in the state have been given vaccination.
